Biographical or historical data
On 15 May 1862, the Virginia legislature authorized Governor John Letcher to commission John B. Floyd a major general of the state. Floyd was authorized to raise a force by voluntary enlistment of up to 10,000 men who were not already in the Confederate army or liable for the Confederate draft. The State Line eventually consisted of one brigade containing five regiments and one artillery battalion. Company G, 2nd Regiment, commanded by Captain James R. Cook, was part of this recruiting effort. On 28 February 1863, the assembly abolished the State Line and transferred the troops to Confederate service. The assembly declared that the enlistments of all troops in the line ended with the passage of this act. Few of the members of the State Line went into the Confederate Army. Company G became part of the 45th Battalion Virginia Infantry.
