Jones was a VMI graduate originally from Marshall County, (West) Virginia, who was in Richmond to get a commission when he was appointed the regiment's major. Scott's successor Norvell Cobb came from Prince Edward County; Hubard's successor Thomas R. Buckner from Buckingham County, and Jones' (who became a lieutenant colonel) replacement was David W. Anderson of Fluvanna County.
