Records, 1795-1815, of Jonathan Porter Felt, of Salem, Massachusetts, including a permit, 1795, in several languages, for the ship "Brothers", bound for the East Indies with a cargo of wine, cheese, butter, glass, shoes, books, and other luxuries; insurance policy, 1815, from the Union Marine Insurance Company; and a pass, 1815, for the ship "Sophia." Records also include a military parole, 28 March 1812, issued to Felt, captain of the merchant ship "Monk," as prisoner of war, parole provides a physical description of Felt. Also includes ledger, 1806-1808, kept by Felt while travelling on the "Pompey" from Salem, Massachusetts, to the Island of Reunion and Italy, recording the purchase and sale of cargoes of coffee, brandy, and other goods, and including copies of nine business letters. There is also a brief account of the Chesapeake-Leopard Incident, which took place 22 June 1807

During the period covered by these records, Felt had temporary residence at St. Denis, capital city of the Island of Bourbon, now known as the Island of Reunion; Salem, Massachusetts; and Palermo, Italy.
