Thomas Massie was born 22 August 1747 in New Kent County, Virginia, to William Massie (1718-1751) and Martha Macon Massie (d. 1759). After his father's death, Massie's mother married Richard Bland (1710-1776) of Prince George County. Bland saw to Massie's and his brother's education and entered them in William & Mary College. Massie left William & Mary in 1763 to run his estate. When the American Revolution began, Massie was appointed a captain in the 6th Virginia Regiment and saw action at the battles of Long Island, Monmouth, and Rhode Island. Appointed a major in the 2nd Virginia Regiment 20 February 1778, Massie retired to Virginia in the Spring of 1779, subject to recall to duty if necessary. While in Virginia, he married Sarah Cocke (1760-1838) of New Kent County, 11 April 1780. Massie served as aide to General Thomas Nelson (1738-1789) who commanded the Virginia militia, and was at Yorktown, Virginia, when the British surrendered. After the war, Massie relocated with his wife to Frederick County, Virginia, where his sons, Thomas (1782-1864), Henry (1784-1841), and William (1795-1862) were born. Massie relocated his family one last time in 1803, settling in a part of Amherst County, Virginia, which later became Nelson County. A successful planter and shrewd businessman, Massie operated a large plantation, a mill and stills. He died 2 February 1834.
