Scrapbook, 1917-1919, of Captain Alexander B. Carrington Jr. (1895-1974) of Danville, Virginia, chiefly documenting his World War I service. Includes a program, 20 November 1917, from a dinner given at Fort Monroe, Virginia, during Carrington's Coast Artillery Corps training; clippings of war-related poems; a 5-franc note from Luxembourg; telegrams and other communications conveying holiday greetings, news of Carrington's promotion to captain, and word of his April 1919 return to the States; French food stamps; postcards with scenes from Luxembourg, France, and Germany; and a letter, 24 March 1919, from U.S. Senator Claude A. Swanson to Carrington's mother, assuring her that her son would be returning home within the next few weeks. Included among the photographs are images of Carrington in football and military uniforms, his fellow servicemen, an ocean transport, views of the countryside and bombed-out buildings in France, and a visit by General John J. Pershing (1860-1948). Some of the photographs may have been stock images taken by the French Army

Biographical or historical data
Alexander Berkeley Carrington Jr. was born on 26 January 1895 in Danville, Virginia, the son of Alexander (b. 1862) and Mary (b. 1862) Carrington. He attended Hampden-Sydney College before entering military service in World War I. Carrington received training at the Coast Artillery School, Fort Monroe, Virginia, in 1917. He then went overseas as part of the Coast Artillery Corps, initially ranked first lieutenant and later captain. At age 47, on his World War II draft registration card, he listed himself as an employee of Dibrell Bros. of Danville. Carrington died in Danville in July 1974.
