Born 14 July 1831 in Pomfret, Windsor County, Vermont, Alexander Bowman Chandler enlisted as a sergeant the 1st Vermont Cavalry during the Civil War. He was promoted to lieutenant, then captain. After the war, he married Ellen Matilda Miller 11 July 1866.
