Summary
  • Numerous complaints were received by Governor Francis Nicholson concerning Virginia laws affecting the church and clergy. On 7 April 1702 and 29 July 1703, Sir Edward Northey, Attorney General of England, delivered opinions concerning the said laws. On 3 March 1703/04, Governor Nicholson ordered that a copy of Northey's opinion of 29 July 1703 be sent to the churchwardens of each parish in the colony. The churchwardens were to call a meeting of the vestries in order that the governor might be informed of their reactions. (C.O. 5/1314, ff. 271-272.)
