Biographical or historical data
John Floyd (1830-1834) was born 24 April 1783 in Jefferson County, Virginia. He attended Dickinson College in Pennsylvania and earned a medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania, 1806. In 1807, Floyd entered service with the Virginia Militia, eventually rising to the rank of brigadier general. He later became a member of the Virginia House of Delegates, 1814-1815, and the United States House of Representatives, 1817-1829. He was elected governor of Virginia in 1830, completing his term in 1834. Floyd married writer and teacher Letitia Preston (1779-1852) on 13 May 1804 in Franklin County, Kentucky.
