Carlby, originally called the Booth House and later the Old Mitchell House, was built about 1768 by George Booth, a Sussex County Court Justice, in the Stony Creek area of Sussex County. In 1946, Captain Carl W. and Bea Porter purchased this Georgian home from its owner, George W. Mitchell, and moved the house to its present location on Dogue Creek, Fairfax County, Virginia in 1947. It was restored and renamed Carlby after its new owners.
