The collection consists of manuscripts and papers relating to the Washington family and to other owners of George Washington's plantation. Includes 3 groups of manuscripts: I. The George Washington-William Pearce correspondence, 1793-1798 (reel 887); II. the Storer-Decatur collection, 1789-1801 (reel 888); III. John A. Washington-Eleanor L. Selden papers, 1766, 1842-1860 (reel 888). The first group includes correspondence of William Pearce, George Washington's plantation manager during this period. The second group includes papers relating to business operations of John Augustine Washington (1821-1861), George Augustine Washington, Samuel Washington, George Washington Parke Custis (1781-1857), and Tobias Lear. The last group contains mostly correspondence of the last private owner, John Augustine Washington (1821-1861) and his wife, Eleanor Love Selden Washington

Biographical or historical data
Chartered in 1856, the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association of the Union, had as its goal the purchase and preservation of George Washington's Mount Vernon plantation. John Augustine Washington (1821-1861), the last private owner of Mount Vernon, sold it to the association on Feb. 22, 1859.
