Summary
  • Papers, 1900-1962, of Arthur W. Lee, Jr. (1894-1965) of Richmond, Virginia, concerning his trusteeship, together with Charles P. Lee (1861-1940) and Arthur W. Lee (1854-1949), of family property known as the "Sandy Hill Tract," near Stapleton in Amherst County, Virginia. The collection includes agreements and contracts, correspondence, deeds, maps, sand analysis reports, and tax receipts
  • There is correspondence with Walker, Mosby, and Calvert, a real estate firm in Lynchburg, regarding the leasing or selling of the property, and the terms. The tract had considerable deposits of silica sand, and there is a good deal of correspondence with marble, granite, glass, and cement companies regarding leasing rights and options, including the Lynchburg Glass Works and Marsteller Marble and Granite Works, both in Lynchburg, and the Libbey-Owens Sheet Glass Company in Charleston, West Virginia. In addition, there are analysis reports detailing the composition of the sand. There is also information about the sale of timber rights on the property. There are letters to Joseph Pettyjohn (1867-1942), a relative who owned property adjoining "Sandy Hill," and John Bowling (b. ca. 1883), a tenant and caretaker, regarding improvements and repairs to the property and rent collections. There is also correspondence relative to taxes due, as well as information on the adminstration of the estate of Mary Elizabeth (Pettyjohn) Lee (1827-1918)
