  • The ledgers cover the years 1933-1934, and contain customer account information for merchandise sold, including groceries and automobile parts and repairs, accounts for gas, oil, and kerosene bought and sold by Davis, expense accounts, and cash sales figures. The diaries and memorandum books contain sawmill accounts, as well as entries relating to weather conditions, social activities, and births and deaths in the area. The volume for 1919 is the most complete. The others are only sparsely notated

Biographical or historical data
Beverly James Davis, Sr, was born on 14 February 14 1897. He married Virgie Etta Travis (1897-1958) on 19 May 1918. Davis worked as a millwright for Surry Lumber Company in Dendron, Surry County, Virginia, and for the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company, before he settled in Richmond, where managed a service station, and later owned and operated a fuel oil delivery business that traded as B&B Oil Company. Later in life he worked as a cabinetmaker. He died on 25 October 1978 in Chesterfield County, Virginia, and is buried in Maury Cemetery in Richmond.
