Biographical or historical data
James Johnston was born in Dumfries, Scotland in May 1749. He was raised and educated in the Presbyterian Church. Johnston enlisted in the British army and was made a prisoner of war when General John Burgoyne surrendered his troops after the battle of Saratoga. While quartered in Virginia, Johnston became an ardent supporter of the American cause and refused to return to the British army upon his release. He married Margaret Kirth of Fauquier County, Virginia, in 1781, and they had nine children. Johnston converted to the Baptist Church and became a minister, serving congregations in Fauquier County, then moving to Rockingham County, Virginia. After a while, he moved to Kanawha County, (West) Virginia, before moving to Fleming County, Kentucky. Johnston died in Fleming County October 1829.
