Biographical or historical data
The Harrison family, descendants of Benjamin Harrison, Clerk of the House of Virginia (fl. 1642), were a wealthy family of planters, politicians, and soldiers from Berkley, Charles City County, Virginia. Among the most prominent family members were Benjamin Harrison (1673-1710), speaker of the House of Burgessess, Treasurer and Attorney General of Virginia, and Benjamin Harrison (ca. 1726-1791), Governor of Virginia in 1782-1784, and father of President William Henry Harrison (1773-1841). His other son, Benjamin Harrison, Jr. (d. 1799), Paymaster General of the Southern Department, was engaged in the tobacco trade.
