Biographical or historical data
Charles A. Gillet was born in 1841 in Ontario County, New York to James McBurney Gillet (1816-1884) and Eliza Esther Berry Gillet (1818-1887). Charles Gillet enlisted in Company K, 148th New York Infantry, on 29 August 1862 and was mustered in on 5 September 1862. Gillet was promoted to corporal 14 September 1862 and to first sergeant 27 August 1864. He was wounded at Fort Harrison, Virginia, 27 October 1864. Gillet was discharged 18 May 1865 and returned to Ontario County. He and his wife Maryette Wakefield Gillette (1841-1920) had eight children. Gillet died in 1917 and was buried in Chapman Cemetery in Hopewell, Ontario County, New York.
