Charles Scott was born in part of Goochland County, Virginia, which later became Powhatan County, Virginia, about 1739. He served under George Washington in the 1755 Braddock Campaign. When the American Revolution began, Scott recruited the first volunteers south of the James River to serve. He was appointed lieutenant colonel of the 2nd Virginia Regiment in February 1776 and colonel of the 5th Virginia Regiment in May 1776. Scott was appointed a brigadier general in the Continental Army 2 April 1777 and served at Trenton, Germantown, Monmouth, and Stony Point, as well as at Valley Forge. Scott was captured at Charleston, South Carolina, and was paroled and exchanged. In 1783, he was brevetted major general. Scott moved to what is now Kentucky and represented Woodford County in the Virginia assembly. Scott led Kentucky militia in fights against Native Americans and led a contingent of Kentucky troops in Arthur St. Clair's defeat in 1791 and in Anthony Wayne's victory at Fallen Timbers. Scott served as governor of Kentucky from 1808 to 1812. He married first Frances Sweeny (d. 1804) 25 February 1762, and they had children. He married second Judith Cary Bell Gist (d. 1833) 25 July 1807. Scott died 22 October 1813 in Clark County, Kentucky. His remains were reinterred in the state cemetery in Frankfort, Kentucky, 8 November 1854.
