Biographical or historical data
Clara Hill was born 25 November 1884 in Smyth County, Virginia, the daughter of J. D. Hill (1860-1925) and Cannie Paxton Hill (1865-1958). She attended Marion College and Radford College and completed graduate studies at the University of Virginia. She married E. Dickey Carner (b. ca. 1884) 13 May 1908 and they resided in Los Angeles, California, where he was a merchant. By 1930, she had divorced him and returned east. Clara Hill Carner taught for 35 years in Smyth County, other parts of Virginia, and in Asheville, North Carolina. Carner was the founder and first president of the Smyth County Historical and Museum Society and official historian of Smyth County. Carner died 18 March 1979 in Abingdon, Virginia, and was buried in Round Hill Cemetery in Smyth County.
