  • This collection principally contains the papers of or concerning soldiers or adjunct staff in the Confederate States Army and Navy both in Virginia and in other Southern states. These papers primarily concern the Civil War era, but they also contain material concerning the prewar and Reconstruction eras. Some of the papers within this collection are named for the individual collectors who compiled the documents after the war
  • Includes the papers of Confederate infantry, artillery, cavalry, sailors, surgeons, chaplains, officers, generals, quartermasters, and prisoners. Principally consists of correspondence in the form of letters and typed transcripts of letters but also comprises account books, biograhies, clippings, diaries, free black and slave impressment documents, genealogical notes, memoirs, military passes, muster rolls, notebooks, ordnance records, photographs, prescription books, registers, scrapbooks, military records, financial papers, legal papers, prisoner lists, slave lists including name and owner's name, and receipts. Much of the correspondence is exchanged between soldiers and their families. Civil War topics of the collection include Civil War camp life, camp conditions, battles and campaigns, illness and death of soldiers, troop morale, troop movements, court martials, opinions of officers, supplies, military deserters, military hospitals and medical care, and religion. Of note are accounts of the experiences of free blacks and slaves in the service of the Confederacy. Non-military topics are plantation life, plantation management and farming, family matters, family illness and deaths of family members, slaves and slavery, slave revolts, conditions during Reconstruction, teaching, and legal and business matters
