Summary
  • Includes records for one hundred thirty-two predecessor and subsidiary companies associated with the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway Company. The most substantial segments of the collection are those containing the records of The Chesapeake and Ohio Railway Company, Chesapeake and Ohio Equipment Corporation, Cincinnati Union Terminal Company, Hocking Valley Railway Company, and Pere Marquette Railway Company
  • The bulk of the material is meeting minutes. These include meetings of company stockholders, boards of directors, and executive committees. Many of the company records also contain original legal instruments such as articles of incorporation, mortgages, and certificates of dissolution. Also included are documents concerning the elections of company officers, as well as stock certificates. The collection contains very little correspondence. Many of the records for a particular predecessor or subsidiary company are complete in that the organizing and dissolving instruments are included, as well as the entire record of the company's corporate meetings
  • In some instances annual reports are also included within the records for a particular company. In addition, a separate series of annual reports has been added at the end of the collection. This series of annual reports is not complete. Not every company in the collection is represented. There are also predecessor and subsidiary company's annual reports for which there are no other corporate records
  • The original records in this collection, which are held by the Chesapeake and Ohio Historical Society in Clifton Forge, Virginia, were microfilmed by the Virginia State Library and Archives under a grant received by the Society from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission

Biographical or historical data
The Chesapeake and Ohio Railway's origin was the Louisa Railroad, begun in central Virginia in 1836, and was later renamed the Virginia Central. The Virginia Central was taken over by Collis P. Huntington in 1869, who reorganized it as the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad. It went into receivership in 1875, and re-emerged in 1878 as the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway. It went into receivership again in 1888 and was reorganized the following year under the control of Vanderbilt interests. C & O became one of the major carriers in the South and East by the turn of the century. By World War II, it was the pre-eminent carrier of bituminous coal. By 1947, C & O covered more than 5,000 miles in seven states and one Canadian province. In 1972, Chessie System Railroads was created as a holding company to operate C & O, the Baltimore & Ohio, and Western Maryland railroads, which were integrated. C & O was merged into CSX Transportation in 1985.
