Biographical or historical data
The General Assembly passed an act at its May 1780 session creating the War Office to replace the Board of War, which was abolished. Col. William Davies, a colonel in the 1st and 14th Virginia militia, was appointed as Commissioner of the War Office in 1780 and resigned his commission in 1782. The War Office was abolished by an act of the General Assembly passed at its October 1782 session.
