Summary
Papers, 1795-1913, of the Coulling, Stubbs, and Hudgins families of Richmond, Virginia. Includes correspondence, mainly written by Albert Gallatin Stubbs (1809-1865) and Elias Perrin Hudgins (1835-1902), as well as a marriage register of Rev. James Coulling (1756-1807), marriage bonds, Confederate currency and bonds, slave records, and stock certificates for various businesses, including the Richmond Importing and Exporting Company and the Virginia Volunteer Navy Company. There is also an Appomattox parole and pass, and an appointment in the First Regiment of Virginia Volunteers. The collection also contains an autograph album of Mary Elizabeth Stubbs (1840-1865) which includes signatures of Gen. Lafayette McLaws (1821-1898) and his staff. There are also copies of records of the Free School of Richmond, including subscription lists (1801-1804), and an inventory and appraisement of the estate of Albert G. Stubbs

Biographical or historical data
Rev. James Coulling was born in Limehouse, England on 22 December 1756. He emigrated to Richmond, Virginia, where he was a tailor, tutor in the Charity School of Richmond, and a Methodist minister. He married Elizabeth Sullers. His granddaughter Elizabeth Coulling was born on 9 February 1816 in Richmond. She married Albert Gallatin Stubbs (1809-1865). She died on 9 February 1853. They are buried in Shockoe Hill Cemetery in Richmond. Their daughter Sarah Jane Tomkies Stubbs (1842-1931) marrried Elias Perrin Hudgins (1835-1902).
