Biographical or historical data
Daniel Parke was born about 1665 in York County, Virginia, to Daniel Parke (ca. 1629-1679) and Rebecca Evelyn Knipe Parke (d. 1672). His mother took Daniel Parke to England for his education, where he remained until his father came to get him and returned to Virginia. Daniel Parke served as Burgess for York County in the general assembly of 1688 and of Spring 1693. In the fall of 1693, he was elected to represent James City County, Virginia, and in the following assembly he represented New Kent County, Virginia. Parke was appointed to the Governor's Council in 1695. In 1697 he went to England in hopes of securing a seat in Parliament. When that failed, he secured a commission in the English army and became an aide de camp to John Churchill, the Duke of Marlborough. Parke carried the news of Marlborough's victory at the battle of Blenheim to Queen Anne. Queen Anne appointed him governor of the Leeward Islands in 1705, although he had hoped to be named governor of Virginia. Parke had confrontations with the leading citizens of Antigua due to his insistence of upholding royal prerogative, his supressing of smuggling, his attitude, and charges of "debauching" their wives and daughters. Parke was killed by a mob in Antigua on 7 December 1710. Parke had married Jane Ludwell (d. 1708) in the mid 1680s. They had three children, two of whom survived. His daughter Lucy married William Byrd II and his daughter Frances married John Custis.
