Charles W. Clay was born 26 April 1831 in Granville Co. NC, and is said to be the son of Pleasant and Mary G. Clay. He ran a mercantile establishment with connections in Lynchburg, Virginia and Oxford and Wilmington, NC. He died in Arkansas.
