Papers, 1824-1902, of the Denoon family of Powhatan County, Virginia. The bulk of the collection consists of correspondence written by Charles Denoon to his family, while serving with the 102nd Virginia Militia and the 41st Virginia Infantry Regiment, 1861-1864. Topics include camp life, troop movements, family, and health. Denoon's letters contain very detailed accounts of battles in which he fought, including Cold Harbor (Va.), Fredericksburg (Va.), Chancellorsville (Va.), Gettysburg (Pa.), and the siege of Petersburg (Va.). Also included are Denoon's commissions and orders, Special Order No. 1 issued by William Mahone regarding drill instructions, an invoice of supplies, and miscellaneous envelopes. Of note, are muster rolls of Company 4, 102nd Virginia Militia Regiment, Company C, 41st Virginia Infantry Regiment, and Company H, 41st Virginia Infantry Regiment. The collection also contains some miscellaneous undated lists of men who failed to enroll in the Army, men who were exempt from serving in the military and the reason for their exemption, list of prisoners, and a list of men formed to man the batteries around Richmond (Va.)

Biographical or historical data
The Denoon family resided in Powhatan County, Virginia. Charles E. Denoon (1840-1864) was the son of James J. (b. 1795) and Mary A. Taylor Denoon (b. 1796). Charles Denoon served as lieutenant colonel of the 102 Virginia Militia and as second lieutenant of Company K of the 41st Virginia Infantry Regiment. He was captured at the battle of Seven Pines on 1 June 1862 and sent to Fort Delaware (Del.), June to August 1862. Upon his release he commanded Company G of the 41st Virginia Infantry Regiment, was wounded at the Battle of Spotsylvania 12 May 1864, and killed at the Battle of the Crater (Petersburg, Va.) on 30 July 1864. He is buried in Powhatan County, Virginia.
