Biographical or historical data
Born in Norfolk, Virginia, in 1841 to John H. Sale (b. ca. 1819) and Lucy L. Sale (ca. 1820-1894), John F. Sale had begun a career as a carpenter when the Civil War started. Sale enlisted 17 May 1861 in the 12th Virginia Infantry, serving in several of its campaigns. Originally a private, he rose through the ranks, finally becoming a lieutenant 22 November 1864. Mortally wounded at Hatcher's Run, Virginia, on 6 February 1865, Sale died in Petersburg, Virginia 12 February 1865.
