Ellis W. Putney plantation record, 1855-1858
Ellis W. Putney plantation record
Inclusive dates
Plantation record, 1855-1858, kept by Ellis W. Putney, manager at Sycamore Island plantation in Buckingham County, Virginia. About midway through the book, the handwriting changes, and may be that of S. W. Marshall. Many of these latter pages are labeled "Sycamore Island and Fish Pond." Entries typically note weather conditions and the major activities of a given day, such as seeding, threshing wheat, gathering corn, and plowing tobacco. Also of interest are a list of births and deaths in the slave community for the year 1858, and a record of tobacco sold on 8 April 1858, including buyer names, amounts, and prices. The book in which the records were kept, entitled PLANTATION AND FARM INSTRUCTION, REGULATION, RECORD, INVENTORY, AND ACCOUNT BOOK (Richmond, Va.: J. W. Randolph, 1852), contains advice for overseers on topics such as the treatment of slaves, personal conduct, and the management of farm animals. This collection is located on frames 418-481 of the reel

Biographical or historical data
It is unclear whether the Ellis Washington Putney who maintained the first half of this plantation record is Ellis Putney, Sr., born about 1812, or Ellis Putney, Jr., born about 1836, both in Buckingham County, Virginia. The elder Putney married Mary Ann Glover, and died in June 1880. His son Ellis, Jr., married Rosa Wilkinson, and served with the 44th Virginia Infantry Regiment, Company C, in the Civil War. The younger Putney was still living as of June 1904, when he applied for a pension. At that time, he was a resident of Cumberland County, Virginia.
