Photographs, ca. 1895-1953, of and belonging to teacher and professional genealogist Eva Eubank Wilkerson (1884-1965). Three of the photographs, 1908, 1910, and undated, are class portraits taken at one-room schoolhouses in Mecklenburg and King and Queen Counties, taught separately by Eva Eubank (Wilkerson) and her future sister-in-law, Bessie Wilkerson (b. 1886). Each of these images is annotated by Charles E. Wilkerson (1921- ), Eva Wilkerson's youngest son. Other photographs include two images of the Eva and John P. Wilkerson family, ca. 1925, and two studio portraits of Eva Wilkerson. The first portrait shows Wilkerson as a girl, ca. 1895-97; the second was taken in January 1953 at Dementi Studio in Richmond

Biographical or historical data
Eva Lee Eubank was born on 11 October 1884 in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, the third of eleven children. She spent the early part of her career as a teacher, leading one-room schools in Mecklenburg County and King and Queen County, Virginia. In 1909, she married John Wilkerson (b. 1881), brother of a teacher friend named Bessie Wilkerson (b. 1886). The couple eventually had four daughters and two sons. During the Depression, Eva Wilkerson and her three younger children left the Center Cross farm where the family had been living and moved to Tappahannock. She there took on a project indexing Essex County court records for the Works Progress Administration. This work inspired her to compile INDEX TO MARRIAGES IN OLD RAPPAHANNOCK AND ESSEX COUNTIES, VIRGINIA, 1655-1900, which was published in 1953. After relocating to Richmond in 1948, she began a new career as a professional genealogist, continuing this work until 1963. Eva Eubank Wilkerson died in Richmond in July 1965.
