The Governor encloses correspondence labeled #1 through #9. Enclosure #1 contains a letter, dated 1813 December 9, from Governor James Barbour to Col. William Duane, Philadelphia, requesting him to engage a mechanic in Philadelphia to manufacture swords to various officers of the Navy. Also included is a letter from Duane to the Governor Barbour, dated 1814 July 23, regarding a map of the country on the Shenandoah and the procurement of sword blades. Enclosure #2 contains a letter from Barbour to Duane, dated 1814 January 3, informing him that twelve swords are necessary. Also included is a copy of a letter from Duane to Governor Nicholas, dated 1815 June 9, regarding his receipt of $1500 for the swords. Enclosure #4 contains a copy of a letter from Governor Barbour to Duane, dated 1814 June 10, requesting him to have a chart of Virginia's western & eastern waters engraved in Philadelphia. Also included is a letter from Duane to Governor Nicholas, dated 1815 Aug. 4, regarding the swords and the completion of the water line & ways on the map of Kanawha, etc., by the engraver
  • Enclosure #5 contains a letter from Governor Nicholas to Duane, dated 1815 April 15, regarding the engraving of the survey of the upper James River, Greenbrier, New River, & Kanawha rivers in order to ascertain the practicability of forming a water communication between the Atlantic and the Ohio. The Governor also mentions the sword for Commodore Decatur. Also included is a letter from Duane to Governor Nicholas, dated 1815 September 5, regarding the prices of the swords and map. Enclosure #6 contains a copy of a letter from Duane to Governor Nicholas enclosing a receipt of Mr. Hartman, the sword cutter (receipt not included). Also included is a copy of a letter from Governor Nicholas to Duane, dated 1815 April 29, regarding the deposit of $1500 in one of the banks in Philadelphia for the swords
  • Enclosure #7 contains a copy of a letter from Governor Nicholas to Duane, dated 1815 August 28, regarding his question for whom the swords of the highest value are intended. Enclosure #8 contains a copy of a letter from Governor Nicholas to Duane, dated 1815 October 13, the completion of eleven swords with two remaining. Enclosure #9 contains a copy of a letter from Governor Nicholas to Joseph Marx enclosing an order for $1100 as payment to Col. Duane
