Greene (1840-1911) of Kent County, Rhode Island, describing the difficulties of picket duty; construction of breastworks to protect Washington from Confederate attack; and complaints about rations and cooking his own food; and a letter, 14 December 1862, from A. E. Smith of Saratoga, Minnesota, to Greene containing news of mutual friends in Minnesota, Rhode Island, and the army; stating that he misses Rhode Island; commenting on Minnesota; and asking about the war, including about General Burnside

Biographical or historical data
Ezra Greene was born 24 May 1838 in Kent County, Rhode Island, to Lawton Greene (1811-1861) and Sarah A. Card Greene (1813-1904). A carpenter, Greene enlisted in Company H, 2nd Rhode Island Infantry when the Civil War began. After the war, he returned to Kent County and resumed his profession as a carpenter. Greene and his wife Pheobe Gorton Greene had two daughters. Ezra Greene died 25 August 1889 in Kent County and was buried in East Greenwich Cemetery.
