Descended from the Ferguson family of Dinwiddie and Buckingham Counties, Virginia and the Wetzel family of West Virginia, Albert Wilkins Ferguson (1821-1891) and Margaret Jane Wetzel (1822-1895) headed west in 1849. Leaving his wife and children in Missouri, Albert went to California to pan gold, eventually settling in Oregon. In 1852, he sent for his wife and children. Although the children died during the voyage to Oregon through the Isthmus of Panama, the marriage produced six more children, the first being Hope Belt Ferguson in 1853. Hope married Elmira Montgomery in 1881 and worked as a County Auditor in Pomeroy, Washington. They returned to Astoria, Oregon sometime in the early 1890's. In 1900, Hope planned a gold hunting expedition to Alaska, leaving in December 1900 and returning in August of 1901, having survived harsh living and weather conditions. Hope Belt Ferguson died in 1904 in Marshfield, Oregon.
