Biographical or historical data
Francis Harrison Pierpont was born 25 January 1814 near Morgantown, (West) Virginia. He studied law at Allegheny College and was admitted to the bar in 1842. Pierpont served as counsel for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad and was involved in business ventures including mining and shipping, by rail, coal. In the days leading up to the Civil War, Pierpont actively worked in northwestern Virginia to oppose secession. He was a delegate to the first Wheeling Convention and was elected governor of the part of Virginia that remained in the Union. After the creation of the new state of West Virginia (1863), Pierpont was reelected governor of that part of Virginia which remained in the Union. At the end of the Civil War, Pierpont served as governor of all of post-war Virginia until 1868. Pierpont died in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, 24 March 1899.
