Biographical or historical data
Frederick Churchill Hale was born 24 June 1844 in Essex County, New York to Safford Eddy Hale (1818-1893) and Elizabeth Palmer Churchill Chase (1818-1871). After the Civil War began, he enlisted in Company F, 118th New York Infantry on 11 August 1862 and mustered in 29 August 1862. In June 1863, Hale became a clerk for the United States Army Inspector General's office in Norfolk, Virginia. In April 1864, he became clerk for the surgeon in chief of the 3rd Division, XVIII Corps. And in October 1864, he became a clerk for the Department of Virginia and North Carolina. Hale mustered out 3 June 1865. After the war ended, he studied law. Hale settled down in Chicago, Illinois to practice law. He married Mary Louise Kennicott (1849-1937) in June 1878, and they had 2 children. Hale died in Chicago 5 October 1921, and was buried in Riverside Cemetery in Essex County, New York.
