Biographical or historical data
George William Leyburn was born 2 January 1809 in Lexington, Virginia, to John L. Leyburn and Jane McDowell Leyburn. He attended Washington College and the College of New Jersey, the latter in 1829. Leyburn attended Princeton Theological Seminary in 1831-1833 and Union Theological Seminary of Virginia in 1833-1834. He was licensed in 1835 and ordained 30 April 1836 by the Lexington Presbytery. Leyburn was a foreign missionary to Areopolis, Greece, from 1837 to 1842. Returning to Virginia, he was a teacher in Appomattox and Bedford Counties from 1842 to 1853, and served as agent for the American Colonization Society in 1848 and as agent for the Virginia Colonization Society from 1854 to 1855. He served as stated supply for the Piedmont and Montgomery Presbyteries in 1857-1858 and was editor of the PRESBYTERIAN WITNESS in 1858. He was agent for the American Tract Society and during the Civil War was a home missionary. After the war ended, Leyburn was stated supply for the Appomattox Presbytery in 1866 and a pastor from 1867 to 1875. Leyburn went to Salonica, Turkey as a missionary in 1875 and died there 14 August 1875. Leyburn married Elizabeth Winston Moseley (ca. 1811-1879) on 26 October 1836 in Bedford County, and they had at least four children.
