Biographical or historical data
George Madison Hornsby was born 16 October 1842 in Northumberland County, Virginia. He enlisted in Company A, 40th Virginia Infantry, on 26 May 1861. He was promoted to corporal 20 September 1862 and to sergeant 4 May 1863. Hornsby was wounded at Chancellorsville 3 May 1863. He was captured by Union troops 14 July 1863 and exchanged 3 March 1864. Hornsby was captured on 6 April 1865 and sent to Point Lookout, Maryland. He was released 13 June 1865. Hornsby returned to Northumberland County where he was a farmer.
