Biographical or historical data
George Wythe Munford was born 8 January 1803 in Richmond, Virginia. He graduated from the College of William and Mary with a law degree and began working with his father, William Munford, Clerk of the House of Delegates. In 1825, upon the death of his father, he was elected Clerk of the House of Delegates, a position he held for twenty-seven years. He served as Clerk of the Constitutional Convention of 1829-1830. In 1852, he resigned his position as Clerk of the House of Delegates to become Secretary of the Commonwealth, serving in that position until 1865. He revised the Code of Virginia in 1860 and again in 1873 and was the first auditor of the United States Treasury. On 10 January 1882, Munford died in Richmond and was buried in Hollywood Cemetery.
