Summary
These records consist of plats and descriptions of surveys returned in the area granted by the colonial Council to John Robinson and others acting as the Greenbrier Company. The land originally was located in the counties of Augusta and Botetourt. These surveys evidently were not carried into grants. Those resulting in the issuance of patents were destoryed annually. Each survey is filed in a separate folder labeled with the name of the individual for whom the survey was made, the county in which the land was located, the date of the survey, its acreage, and the number of items in the folder

Biographical or historical data
The Greenbrier Company was one of two land companies formed in order to accumulate large tracts of land exceeding the limits specified in the general law of 1705 passed by the colonial legislature. The Company, formed by John Robinson, and others was granted leave to take up 100,000 acres of land, by orders of Council, on October 29, 1751. The company made surveys until the outbreak of the Revolutionary War.
