  • This accession is comprised of two typed manuscripts, one original and one copy, which were copied by her son, William Maxwell (1784-1857). The copy contains an inscription of provenance and names Mrs. William Maxwell, daughter-in-law to Helen Calvert Maxwell Read, as the donor in December of 1889. Mrs. Maxwell also added several respectful notes regarding her mother-in-law

Biographical or historical data
Helen Calvert Maxwell Read (1750-1833) was born in Norfolk, Virginia, to Maximilian Calvert and Mary Vaunders. She was one of five children, the others included, Jonathan, Mary, Savage, Maximilian, and Margaret. Read's first marriage was to Captain James Maxwell on 6 April 1767. Her second marriage was to Doctor John K. Read on 10 February 1805. Read's youngest son, William Maxwell (1784-1857), was educated at Yale and practiced law in Norfolk, Virginia. He was later president of Hampden-Sydney College, secretary of the Virginia Historical Society, and editor of the "Virginia Historical Register and Literary Notebook."
