Phonograph record of a speech, delivered 23 February 1940, by Henry Taylor Wickham, president pro tempore of the Virginia State Senate to a joint session of the Virginia General Assembly on his personal recollections of General Robert E. Lee (1807-1870) and his family. Recording includes an introduction by Ashton Dovell (1885-1949), Speaker of the House of Delegates, and an afterword by Governor James Hubert Price (1882-1943). Biographical or historical data
Henry Taylor Wickham was born 17 December 1849 at "Hickory Hill" in Hanover County, Virginia, to Williams Carter Wickham (1820-1888) and Lucy Penn Taylor Wickham. He received his BA from Washington College (now Washington and Lee University) in 1868 and his LLB from the University of Virginia in 1870. Wickham became an assistant attorney for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad in 1870. Appointed a vice president in 1909, he served as the railroad's general counsel until 1923, and as advisory counsel until his death. Wickham represented Hanover County in the Virginia House of Delegates from 1879 to 1880. From 1889 to 1904, he represented Hanover and Caroline Counties in the Virginia State Senate, and represented those counties, and King William County, Virginia, from 1904 to 1906. In 1923, he returned to the Senate representing Hanover, Caroline, King William, and Goochland Counties and served until his death. He served as president pro tem of the Senate from 1897 to 1906, and again at the time of his death. Wickham married Elise Warwick Barksdale (1861-1952) 17 December 1885 at St. Paul's Church in Richmond, Virginia and they had two sons. Wickham died 5 March 1943 in Richmond, and was buried in Hollywood Cemetery.
