Biographical or historical data
Peter Johnston was born 6 January 1763 to Peter Johnston and Martha Butler Rogers Johnston. When Johnston was two years old, his father moved the family to Prince Edward County, Virginia, and donated 100 acres to the Presbyterian Church for the foundation of Hampden-Sidney College. Peter Johnston attended Hampden-Sidney but quit to join Light Horse Harry Lee's Legion during the American Revolution and he served in the Southern Campaign. After the Revolution, Johnston returned to Prince Edward County and represented it in the House of Delegates from 1792 to 1793, 1798 to 1808, and 1810 to 1811. Johnston was also appointed a brigadier general in the Virginia militia. In 1811 he was appointed a justice for the Virginia General Court, and chose to ride circuit in the western part of the state, moving to Washington County, Virginia. Johnston married first Mary Wood (d. 1825) in 1788, and they had ten children including General Joseph E. Johnston (1807-1891). He married second Anne Bernard 13 December 1828, and they apparently had no children. Johnston died 8 December 1831 at his home Panicello in Washington County, and was buried in the familiy cemetery.
