Summary
Manuscript ordinances, 1776, prepared by the committee for the revision of the laws of Virginia consisting of drafts of 66 of 126 bills reported by the committee. This copy, written by various individuals, appears to have been Thomas Jefferson's (1743-1826) copy. Jefferson also prepared an index. The Virginia general assembly passed an act in October 1776 for the revision of state laws. Jefferson, Edmund Pendleton, George Wythe, George Mason, and Thomas Ludwell Lee were appointed a committee in November 1776 to make necessary revisions. The committee presented the House of Delegates its report 18 June 1779. For more information, including printed copies of the laws, see Julian Boyd, ed., PAPERS OF THOMAS JEFFERSON, vol. 2, pp. 305 ff
