Mason (1798-1871), in Richmond, Virginia, regarding the proof of General Mason's guns in 1844 and 1845, and including a report on the "proof and inspection of medium 32 pdrs. at the Columbia Foundry, July 10th 1844 by Com. A. S. Wadsworth (d. 1851)." Powell's letter was in response to Mason's letter of 30 October 1848

Biographical or historical data
Levin Minn Powell was born 21 April 1803 in Winchester, Virginia. He was appointed a midshipman 1 March 1817, promoted to lieutenant 28 April 1826, promoted to commander 24 June 1843, and promoted to captain 14 September 1855. Powell surveyed Tampa Bay in 1842, served on ordnance duty from 1843 to 1849, and was superintendent of mail steamships. He retired 21 December 1861, promoted to commodore on the retired list 16 June 1862, and to rear admiral 13 May 1869. Powell died in Washington D.C. 15 January 1885.
