Biographical or historical data
  • Joost Hite was born Hans Justus Heyd in Bonfeld, Germany, 5 December 1685 to Johannes Heyd (d. by 1709) and Magdalena Heyd (d. 1695). He married Anna Maria Merckle (1687-1739) 11 November 1704; they had 10 children. Hite and his family left Bonfeld in 1709, went to Rotterdam, Netherlands, where they boarded a ship for America. Hite arrived in New York in 1710 and moved to Germantown, Pennsylvania, in 1713. On 5 August 1731, he acquired 40,000 acres in the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia, and relocated there in the Fall of 1731. He was appointed a magistrate of Orange County, Virginia, in 1734 upon its creation. He then became a prominent citizen of Frederick County, Virginia, upon its creation in 1738. Hite and his family operated an inn and a mill, as well as sold real estate. Hite's Shenandoah Valley grant got him into a dispute with Thomas, Lord Fairfax (1683-1781) which was not resolved in Hite's favor until 1786. Hite remarried 10 November 1741 to Maria Magdalena Neuschwanger, a widow. Hite died early in 1761; his will was probated 7 May 1761 in Frederick County court.
  • Hite had eight children by his first wife Anna Maria, including the following sons who were involved in his lawsuit against Fairfax: John (1715-1792), Jacob (1719-1776), Isaac (1721-1795), Abraham (1729-1790), and Joseph (1731-1757).
