Julian Hastings Granbery was born 28 August 1873 in Edgerton, Ohio, to John Gershom Granbery (1833-1895) and Mary Ann Marsh Megie Granbery (1831-1908). Educated in private and public schools in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Granbery attended the Manual Training School for two years. He worked for three years in the Pencoyd Iron Works in Pencoyd, Pennsylvania, learning about bridges and construction. Granbery became the assistant engineer for the Manhattan Railway in 1900, and opened his own firm in 1907. He served as chief engineer for the Georgia Coast and Piedmont Railroad. He traveled to France in 1913 to study French engineering and returned to France in 1916, during the 1st World War. He entered the 2nd French Army as a volunteer and invalided back to America as a result of a gas attack. After the war, he returned to Europe to help in engineering projects. He returned to America in 1921 and continued his engineering practice. From 1939 to 1942, he served as civil engineer for the Board of Water Supply of the City of New York. Retiring at 70, Granbery devoted the rest of his life to genealogical research of his family. He married Alice McAlpine Hoggard (1883-1964), and they had one child. They divorced in 1914. Granbery died 1 October 1961 in New York, New York, and is buried New York City Marble Cemetery.
