Born in King William County, Virginia, Mary Elizabeth Richeson Quarles (1809-1888) was the daughter of Francis West Richeson (1778-1816) and Elizabeth Ragsdale Richeson (Moss) (1786-1851). She married Francis West Quarles (1803-1840) of Richmond, Virginia, and they had two daughters, one of whom died young. Francis West Quarles had a brother, Thomas Delaware Quarles (1806-1884), and a sister, Susan Ann Quarles Pemberton (b. 1809).
