Biographical or historical data
John Bennett Merritt was born about 1842 in Brunswick County, Virginia, to William H. E. Merritt (1800-1885) and Eliza W. Merritt (b. ca. 1809). He attended Randolph-Macon College in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, from 1857 to 1861. John B. Merritt enlisted in Company G, 6th Virginia Infantry in 1862. He was mortally wounded at the second battle of Manassas and died 21 September 1862 at a hospital in Warrenton, Virginia.
