Biographical or historical data
John Wesley Given was born 13 December 1816 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, to Oliver Given (1771-1836) and Ann Blainey Given (1783-1844). By 1860 he was foreman of the Pennsylvania Canal and living in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. When the Civil War began, Given enlisted in Company B, 63rd Pennsylvania Infantry. After the war, he moved his family to Guthrie County, Iowa. J. W. Given and his wife Nancy were married 22 March 1842 in Blair County, Pennsylvania, and they had three children. Given died 21 February 1870 in Guthrie County and was buried in Oak Grove Cemetery.
