Papers, 1861-1875, of the Jackson family of Lexington, Virginia, and Charlotte, North Carolina, consisting of a letter, dated 22 October 1861, from Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson (1824-1863) to William Harvie Richardson (1795-1876) and B. Haymond of the board of trustees of Virginia Military Institute, stating that he has joined the Confederate army out of a sense of duty and hoping that he can return to his position at VMI when the war ends; a pass, dated 13 July 1862, from Jackson for Reverend Moses Drury Hoge (1818-1899) to move through Jackson's camp; and a letter, dated 10 November 1875 from Mary Anna Jackson (1831-1915) of Charlotte, North Carolina, to Moses Hoge, sending him letters from her husband's papers to choose from for a keepsake

Biographical or historical data
Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson was born 21 January 1824 in Clarksburg, Virginia, to Jonathan Jackson (1790-1826) and Julia Beckwith Neale Jackson (1798-1831). He attended West Point and became an instructor at VMI in Lexington, Virginia. Jackson married first Elinor Junkin (1825-1854) 4 August 1853. After her death in childbirth, Jackson married Mary Anna Morrison (1831-1915) of North Carolina 16 July 1857. They had two daughters, Mary Graham Jackson (1858) and Julia Laura Jackson (1862-1889). After Jackson's death 10 May 1863, Mary Anna Jackson returned to North Carolina. After the Civil War ended, she became known as the "Widow of the Confederacy" and became the honorary president of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. She wrote about her husband and travelled about speaking on him. Mary Anna Jackson died 24 March 1915 in Charlotte, North Carolina.
