- Papers, 1772-1836, of James Monroe (1758-1831), consisting of his correspondence and writings. Correspondence is largely political, focusing on constitutional issues; Monroe's tenure as minister plenipotentiary to France; Virginia politics; treaty negotiations with Great Britain, France, and Spain; slave trade and spread of slavery; internal improvements; the 2nd Bank of the United States; and foreign policy and war issues while serving as Secretary of State and Secretary of War. Writings contain manuscripts of Monroe's autobiography, manuscripts of THE PEOPLE, THE SOVEREIGN; SOME OBSERVATIONS ON THE CONSTITUTION; and A VIEW OF THE CONDUCT OF THE EXECUTIVE; notes; drafts of speeches; articles on foreign and domestic policy; drafts of treaties with Great Britain and Spain; rough draft of a proposed Bill of Rights; and copies the cipher used in their correspondence by Monroe and Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826). Also included is material on the removal of Monroe's body from New York, New York, and its reinterment in Richmond, Virginia, in 1858; and correspondence concerning the New York Public Library's purchase of the collection during the 1890s
