Biographical or historical data
James Thomas, Jr., was born 8 February 1806 in King William County, Virginia, and grew up in Caroline County, Virginia. He moved to Lynchburg where he became involved in the tobacco business. Thomas relocated to Richmond, Virginia, about 1830. Thomas became an innovative and successful tobacco merchant. Thomas and his first wife, Mary C. Puller Thomas (d. by 1842) had two children. He married Mary Woolfolk Wortham (ca. 1825-1897) 5 October 1842, and they had at seven daughters. Thomas died 8 October 1882 in Richmond and was buried in Hollywood Cemetery.
