Biographical or historical data
James Zechariah McChesney was born 7 March 1843 in Rockbridge County, Virginia, to James McChesney (1795-1842) and Frances Ann McNutt McChesney (1806-1877). He attended Washington College. McChesney served in Company F, 11th Virginia Cavalry, and transferred to Company C, 14th Virginia Cavalry, 9 August 1863. McChesney served until sent to the hospital with typhoid fever 9 September 1864. He was honorably discharged in Spring, 1865. McChesney married Lucy Johnson (1844-1933) 4 April 1865 and they had four children. McChesney moved to Charleston, West Virginia, in 1869 and worked as a merchant and an insurance salesman. He died 25 January 1922 in Charleston and was buried in Spring Hill Cemetery.
